The upcoming project in the Dominican Republic will mark the third ISLA project in the Caribbean nation. This project will include two very intense three day Basic Open Water Lifeguard Courses, one in Cabarete-Puerto Plata on the North Coast, and the other in La Romana- Bayahibe on the South Coast.
ISLA is very excited to expand its operations and network to La Romana where we will continue to work training lifeguards in an effort to curb drownings and prevent aquatic related injuries.
Not only will the ISLA instructors be training new lifeguards in November, on this project a select number of Dominicans that have participated in past ISLA projects will begin the process of being trained as Lifeguard Instructors. This is an exciting step towards the ultimate goal of self-sufficient and sustainable lifeguard programs in the country, and the ISLA staff will be working hard to ensure the quality implementation of successful programs that will continue to make an impact after the ISLA team leaves.
ISLA will be working alongside Viva Wyndham Tangerine Hotel in Cabarete, Laurel Eastman Kite School, The Dominican Civil Defense, The International Law Enforcement Association, Alegria Hotel, and the La Romana-Bayahibe Hotel Association to make this project a reality. The Fall 2012 DR training project will take place from the 15th of November to the 26th of November.
*There is still space for two more lifeguards to be a part of the volunteer instructor team. Spanish preferred but not required, email William.firstname.lastname@example.org ASAP if you are interested!
