SurfAid International

Mission Statement:
SurfAid International is a non-profit humanitarian organization whose aim is to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.

Overview:
SurfAid, in partnership with communities and government, works to prevent disease, suffering and death through educational programs and health promotion that aim to change poor health behaviors and reduce the risk from natural disasters.

SurfAid’s goal is to empower communities to help themselves and build local capacity so their improved health resilience is sustainable. The organization advocates health and wellbeing for all and create collaborative relationships with other stakeholder groups wherever we can so as to further sustained change in behavior and development.

SurfAid’s community based health programs involve education in nutrition, hygiene, healthy environments, and disease prevention – including mosquito net distribution. In response to an unfortunately frequent need, SurfAid has built an award winning capacity in Emergency Preparedness and have delivered practical, locally-based Emergency Responses.

We are the International Surf Lifesaving Association (ISLA), and we have developed a prototype of the world’s first Global Drowning Tracker©. The Global Drowning Tracker© works by allowing people around the world to input statistics on drownings. Anyone with access to the internet or a cellphone (via SMS text messaging) can report a drowning. The end result is a tool that enables researchers, lifesavers and drowning prevention experts a real-time snapshot of where resources can cost-effectively be implemented to prevent the global drowning epidemic.
